I am back to do these prompts and let me tell you they help keep things in perspective for me and it reminds me not to hold on to stupid stuff.
Prompt: What book are you most grateful for?
This one is a tough one for me because I just love books in general. Books were my escape when I was being bullied and tortured. To quote Jorge Luis Borges “I have always imagined that paradise will be a kind of library.” Needless to say, I have always been a bookworm and need to have some sort of a physical. Reading on the kindle just doesn’t do it for me. That said there were two books that I discovered early on in which I was able to relate on a cultural level.
1) Bless me Ultima by Rodolfo Anaya. I have an “Ultima” in my life and there have been times when I have wanted to be her. She is a character of strength, wisdom, and many lessons to be able to culturally identify with her was a big deal for me as it allowed me for the first time to feel emotions when I was reading.
2) Like Water for Chocolate by Laura Esquivel. I love the fact this books shares recipes just like my mom has always done with me and it also shared everything that is connected to cooking. I love to read stories that take me to a happy place where I smile.
Discovering both this books in my paradise was critical for me during a time when the world was telling me that I didn’t belong anywhere, these books allowed me to identify with the characters and reminded me that I have a place in this world somewhere. These also led me down a path of discovering other Latino authors, and of even more reading which for me turned out to be great since being in the library was better than being bullied. It’s how I was able to survive and get through things.
Go out there and find a book to read, for one writing is becoming a lost art and one way to become a better writer is to read.
Much love, hugs and good vibes
